Types of SMD LED Displays
SMD LED displays are categorized into indoor and outdoor types based on application scenarios. Each model corresponds to specific size and performance requirements:
Indoor: SMD0808, SMD1010, SMD1515, SMD2121, SMD3528, etc.
Outdoor: SMD1415, SMD1921, SMD2525, SMD2727, SMD3535, etc.
Decoding SMD LED Model Numbers
The naming convention reflects the physical dimensions of the LED chip in millimeters (mm), formatted as SMD[Length × Width].
Examples:
SMD2121: Chip size = 2.1mm × 2.1mm.
SMD1515: Chip size = 1.5mm × 1.5mm.
Selection Tips:
Smaller chips (e.g., SMD1010): Ideal for high resolution indoor LED displays (e.g., conference rooms, exhibitions).
Larger chips (e.g., SMD3535): Suitable for long-viewing-distance outdoor applications (e.g., billboards, stadiums).
How do they determine LED display?
1. Pixel Pitch
Definition: The distance (in mm) between the centers of two adjacent pixels (both horizontal direction and vertical direction).

Critical Insights: Smaller pixel pitch = Higher resolution and sharper image quality. Chip size must be smaller than the pixel pitch.
For example: For a P2 (2mm pitch) display, use SMD1010 (1.0mm) or SMD1515 (1.5mm), as their sizes are <2mm. For a P2.5 (2.5mm pitch) display, use SMD1515 (1.5mm) or SMD2121 (2.1mm), as their sizes are <2.5mm.
2. Resolution
Definition: Pixel density per unit area, determined by chip size and pixel pitch. 1pc LED is 1 pixel in LED screen. Small SMD LEDs enable higher pixel density than big SMD LEDs in same screen size. And resolution has pixels in both horizontal direction and vertical direction. More pixels means higher resolution.
Example: A 1m2 P2 display (SMD1515) has about 56% more pixels than a P2.5 display (SMD1515).
3. Cost
Chip size: Similar to other electronic components, smaller chips (e.g., SMD1010) cost more due to their intricate manufacturing processes.
Module complexity: Within same module size, smaller SMD LEDs require more electronic components, such as wires and ICs, to support the increased number of LEDs. This higher density of components and LEDs further drives up the overall cost.
Q&A: Can SMD1515 Be Used for a P2.5 LED Display?
The answer is yes. The pixel pitch of P2.5 is 2.5mm, and both SMD1515 (1.5mm × 1.5mm) and SMD2121 (2.1mm × 2.1mm) are compatible with P2.5. However, SMD2121 is typically preferred for P2.5 LED screens due to its lower cost. SMD1515, while more expensive, offers superior performance in areas such as contrast ratio, grayscale, viewing angle, and color gamut. Therefore, the choice depends on balancing budget constraints with the need for higher display quality.
4. Maintenance
Small SMD LEDs cost more in maintenance.
Large LED chips (e.g., SMD3535): Individual LEDs can be replaced, reducing downtime.
Small LED chips (e.g., SMD1010): Often require full module replacement, raising labor costs.
5. Performance
Smaller SMD LEDs offer several performance advantages, making them ideal for high definition LED displays with finer pixel pitches. They provide a wider viewing angle (up to 160°), ensuring clear visibility from various perspectives. Additionally, smaller LEDs deliver a higher contrast ratio (e.g., 5000:1 compared to 3000:1), resulting in deeper blacks, brighter whites, and more vibrant colors. This enhances the overall display quality, making video content appear more detailed, lifelike, and visually immersive.

SMD1515 P1.86 LED Display VS SMD2121 P2.5 LED Display
Both LED modules size is 320x160 mm. But P1.86 LED module resolution is 172x86 pixels, and P2.5 LED module resolution is 128x64 pixels.
In this video, P1.86 has better performance and higher resolution than P2.5.
SMD1515 P2 LED display and SMD2121 P4 LED display
Both LED modules size is 256x128 mm. But P2 LED module resolution is 128x64 pixels, and P4 LED module resolution is 64x32 pixels.
In same screen size, P2 will can display more details and has higher resolution than P4.

SMD2727 P5 LED display and SMD3535 P10 LED display
Both LED modules size is 320x160 mm. But P5 LED module resolution is 64x32 pixels, and P10 LED module resolution is 32x16 pixels.
