How many kinds of SMD LED display right now?
Indoor: SMD0808, SMD1010, SMD1515, SMD2121, SMD3528, etc.
Outdoor: SMD1415, SMD1921, SMD2525, SMD2727, SMD3535, etc.
What does the number mean in SMD LED?
SMD LED names as dimension of LED. For example: SMD2121 means the LED's dimension is 2.1mm x 2.1mm.
How do they determine LED display?
1. Pixel Pitch
Pixel pitch is the distance between 2 pixels in LED display. 1 pixel is the center point in LED. The distance between 2 LEDs (center point) in both horizontal direction and vertical direction is the pixel pitch in LED display.

Here is the example. SMD2121 LED's dimension is 2.1mm x 2.1mm. The pixel pitch of P2 is 2mm. The LED’s dimension is bigger than the pixel pitch. Therefore P2 LED display is SMD1515 or SMD1010.
2. Resolution
1pc LED is 1 pixel in LED screen. Small SMD LEDs will have more pixels than big SMD LEDs in same screen size. And resolution has pixels in both horizontal direction and vertical direction. More pixels means higher resolution.
3. Cost
Like other electronic component, the smaller in SMD, the more expensive in cost. And in same module size, small SMD LED module need more electronic components like Wires, ICs. In same module size, it has more LEDs in small SMD LEDs.
For example, can we use SMD1515 for P2.5?
The answer is yes. The pixel pitch of P2.5 is 2.5mm. SMD1515 LED's dimension is 1.5mm x 1.5mm and SMD2121 LED's dimension is 2.1mm x 2.1mm. Both can be used for P2.5. But we use SMD2121 for P2.5 LED display normally. Becasue SMD1515 is more expensive than SMD212, the total cost of SMD1515 P2.5 LED display will be more expensive than SMD2121 P2.5. In addition to being more expensive, what advantages does SMD1515 has over SMD2121? In terms of overall performance, SMD1515 is better than SMD2121, like contrast ratio, gray scale, viewing angle and color gamut, etc.
4. Maintenance
Small SMD LEDs cost more in maintenance. You can change broken LEDs in big SMD LED modules. But it is difficult to change broken LEDs in small SMD LED modules. Then you have to change the whole modules.
5. Performance
Smaller SMD LEDs can be compatible with more pixel pitch LED display. Smaller has wider wiewing angle. Smaller has highr contrast ratio and the video display is more delicate and realistic.

SMD1515 P1.86 LED Display VS SMD2121 P2.5 LED Display
Both LED modules size is 320x160 mm. But P1.86 LED module resolution is 172x86 pixels, and P2.5 LED module resolution is 128x64 pixels.
In this video, P1.86 has better performance and higher resolution than P2.5.
SMD1515 P2 LED display and SMD2121 P4 LED display
Both LED modules size is 256x128 mm. But P2 LED module resolution is 128x64 pixels, and P4 LED module resolution is 64x32 pixels.
In same screen size, P2 will can display more details and has higher resolution than P4.

SMD2727 P5 LED display and SMD3535 P10 LED display
Both LED modules size is 320x160 mm. But P5 LED module resolution is 64x32 pixels, and P10 LED module resolution is 32x16 pixels.
