Nowadays LED display is widely used invarious fields both indoor and outdoor. One of the most important parameter of any LED display screen/sign is simply its brightness. Anyone who’s tried to use a mobile phone in dark room understands that the screen is too shine to watch. Also anyone who’s tried to use a mobile phone at the beach or watch a TV bathed in afternoon sun understands that viewing the screen in daylight is what really counts, no matter how rugged the display is. So the LED display brightness is the one thing that truly important.
Lumens, Nits, CD/m2
These are used to measure the brightness. What are the differences?
Nits, CD/m2
The nits equals CD/m2 (also known as“candelas per square meters”). A nit is a unit of measurement for the total brightness over one square meter of a LED display. This value takes into account all of the contributing factors to brightness, such as the number of LEDs per pixel, the pixel pitch (distance between pixels) and the brightness of individual LEDs. Nits is used to measure the brightness of the screen (such as LED display, LCD display, mobile phone screen, TV screen etc.).
Lumens
Lumen is a physical unit that describes luminous flux. It is interpreted in physics as the total emitted luminous flux produced by a candle at a solid angle. It is typically used for single light sources such as projectors and flashlights. As the light source gets farther away from the surface it is projecting on, the brightness per square meter decreases (think of this as the same amount of light spread over a larger area).
The brightness measurement assumes that all of the LEDs in LED display within the square meter are on at their full brightness as allowed by the LED screen software and hardware configuration. This means the LED display screen is at its brightest white for a full color display. We use nits to measure the brightness of LED display.
LED Display Brightness Range
The brightness range of the indoor LED display is recommended to be around 800-1200nits, and it is best not to exceed this range. The brightness range of the outdoor LED display is about 4000-10000nits, which should not be too bright.
For the LED display, it is better not to adjust the brightness as high as possible. For example, the maximum brightness of an outdoor LED display is 5000nits, but you adjust the brightness to 7000nits, which is already exceeding the range it can bear. It will have 7000nits brightness, but the life span will be much shorter and it will be much easier to be broken.
How to adjust the indoor LED display brightness?
Indoor LED display brightness range: 800-1200nits
There are 2 ways to adjust the brightness.
1. Manual
You can adjust the brightness through software based on your requirement.
2. Automatic
You can adjust the brightness through software by selecting time range. Then the brightness will adjust the brightness at that time range.
You can buy light sensor. With the light sensor, the screen will adjust the brightness automatically.

What else can affect the brightness shouldbe considered?
Indoor LED display
There are two important things to consider related to LED screen brightness: the lights and sun shine. You need to adjust the brightness based on the lights and sun shine. Or you can turn off some lights and close the curtains to create a darker environment.
Outdoor LED display
There are two important things to consider related to LED screen brightness: how strong the sun shine is on the screen, and how long the sun shine is on the screen. Ensuring that your LED screen is readable during the day is vital to the success of having passersby read your LED screen. The brighter the display, the better it is. But it is best not to exceed its range.
Let’s talk more about outdoor LED display brightness under sun shine.
Here are 3 kinds of sun shine on screen.
1. No sun shine on screen during the day (shadow).
4000nits – 5000nit brightness is enough. The passersby will can see clear and bright videos, images and texts etc.
2. Sunset.
5000nits – 6500nits brightness is enough. Thepassersby will can see clear and bright videos, images and texts etc.
3. Sun shine at noon.
6500nits – 10000nits brightness is enough. The passersby will can see clear and bright videos, images and texts etc.
Brightness is too high or too low will affect the performance of the LED display. However, if you have a clear and detailed understanding of the brightness and usage environment of the LED display, then you will be able to use your display better and more efficiently!
